041. 'Worth Your Salt' Pop-up Shop Craighton Berman will be participating in Worth Your Salt, a pop-up shop opening in Chicago for the 2009 holiday shopping season. Curated by The Object Design League, the shop will feature a collection of objects by 19 emerging American designers, bringing together themes of industriousness and play.The shop will open in Pavilion’s storefront in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago on the day after Thanksgiving (Nov 27), celebrating "Black Friday" with an evening shopping reception. Recent Press for Coil Lamp Coil was recently featured on many high profile blogs, including Gizmodo (best quote: "Part of the Höm Depot line"), Make Magazine, Core77, Geekologie, Apartment Therapy's Unplggd & Ohdeedoh, as well as dozens of others from around the world. Much of the attention stemmed from Technabob, coincidentally based in Chicago. Quite possibly my favorite post was from the Italy-based Designerblog, after being sent through Google Translate.038. Design Chicago 2010 Exhibition Craighton was selected to take part in "Design Chicago 2010", an exhibition at the University of Central Missouri, running from September 28th to November 6th, 2009. The show highlights recent work by Chicago-based graphic, industrial, and interior designers such as Studio 1 a.m., Project H Design, Craighton Berman, Perkins+Will, and Rotofugi. Interview on Design Glut Craighton recently sat down with Kegan & Liz-- the designers behind Design Glut, the Brooklyn-based design house & entrepreneur blog, to discuss the multifaceted practice that is Craighton Berman Design.036. New project: 'Stimulation' 'Stimulation' brings nicotine & caffeine together into one vessel, but the design keeps one from enjoying both at the same time. Slideshow Craighton recently presented "Some things I've been thinking about" at the June edition of 'Slideshow', a series of 5-minute lectures put together by the Object Design League. Craighton's presentation was a stream-of-consciousness series of obscure illustrated observations, chimerical concept sketches, and surrealist proposals scanned directly from his sketchbook.033. Coil Lamp Now Available for Order The first edition of Coil Lamp is available for purchase in two forms: Handmade ($150) and D.I.Y. ($65 - limited-time price).'Handmade' lamps are numbered and signed limited editions, that are hand-coiled and come ready to plug in and use. 'D.I.Y' versions are flatpack designs-- perfect for shipping-- and include the plexiglass frame and bulb adaptor, allowing the buyer to customize their lamp by wrapping their own extension cord. 032. Guerrilla Truck Show 2009 Craighton will be participating in this year's Guerrilla Truck Show, coinciding with Neocon 2009. Designers create "showrooms" in the back of box-trucks, back them up to the loading docks in the Fulton Market warehouse district, and host an impromptu design exhibition from their mobile galleries. The one-night-only show opens Tuesday June 16 from 6-9pm, on the loading docks in front of Morlen Sinoway Atelier at 1052 West Fulton Market. Craighton will be showing the latest version of the Coil Lamp, a new Coil Pendant Lamp prototype, as well as the new project Stimulation.031. "The Promise of This Moment" Exhibition Craighton will be showing a new project in an exhibition entitled "The Promise of This Moment - Objects That Augment the Everyday" during Neocon 2009. This exhibition "intends to highlight the capacity of objects to transform banal and commonplace activities into moments of play, relief, beauty and delight, exploring the aesthetic and experiential opportunities that lay hidden within routine."An opening reception is scheduled for Monday June 15th from 6-9pm at a raw space at 2035 W. Wabansia in Wicker Park. This show is organized by the Object Design League and The Mighty Bearcats. 030. Design Within Reach MDF 2009 Craighton Berman was selected as one of 15 designers to exhibit in this year's M+D+F show at Design Within Reach on April 30th, 2009. An updated version of Coil Lamp will be on display at the show, and will be officially available for purchase via craightonberman.com following the exhibition.029. Cut&Paste 2009 Craighton participated as a judge in Chicago's 2009 Cut&Paste, a global design competition that pits designers against each other, their work projected in real-time for the audience. Contestants are given 20 minutes to create design pieces based on a theme, and are judged at the end of the round. Craighton was a judge for the 3D design competition.028. Virginia Tech Workshop Craighton Berman and a colleague from gravitytank travelled to Virginia Tech, Berman's alma mater, to present a lecture to the school of Architecture and Design, as well as facilitate an all-day innovation workshop for industrial design students.027. Viz Think workshop Craighton Berman shared a methodology for using storyboarding as a collaborative tool for designing experiences during the 2009 VizThink conference in San Jose, California. DP Interview Craighton was recently interviewed for the "Who's Next?" feature in the Industrial Designers Society of America's "Design Perspectives" publication, in print and on the web.025. Teaching at SAIC This semester Craighton started teaching "Object Sketching: Ideation and Illustration" at the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The course is part of the undergraduate degree track for the Designed Objects program, part of the Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects department, housed on the top floor of the historic Sullivan Center.024. Feature in Chicago Home Magazine Coil Lamp is featured in "Goods: Ones of a Kind" in the January 2009 issue of Chicago Home magazine. Coil will become commercially available in February 2009.023. Recent Press Some recent press in the wake of the Deceptive Design show: An interview on the Ponoko Blog (images below), a feature on Coil on Apartment Therapy LA, and an appearence in the "What's Hot" issue of the Chicago Tribune Magazine. (150kb pdf)022. Deceptive Design Exhibition Ending "Deceptive Design", a conceptual exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center, will be ending January 3rd, 2009. For those outside of Chicago, the exhibition website has been updated with photos of all the other in the show. Deceptive Design has stirred up some press attention for Coil Lamp, with articles in print and web format from the Chicago Tribune magazine & newspaper, Core77 Clogger Blog, Time Out Chicago, Dexigner, and many others. Craighton also provided a radio interview for Chicago Public Radio's "Three To See" on Eight-Forty-Eight. ![]() 021. Innovation Workshop Craighton worked with a small team from gravitytank to present and facilitate a day-long innovation methodology workshop to 200 participants at Designweek Monterrey 2008 in Monterrey, Mexico. ![]() 020. New Work + Exhibition A new project entitled Coil Lamp, has been posted in concept form. This piece is currently being fabricated for "Deceptive Design", a juried design exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center running from October 10th - January 3rd, 2009, with an opening on October 10th from 6-8pm. Craighton has also been a member of the Deceptive Design exhibition planning team, a collaboration between the Chicago Furniture Designer's Association and the Chicago chapter of the Industrial Designer's Association of America.019. Exhibition Craighton Berman will be participating in an exhibition showcasing projects from the past 4 years of Design Within Reach's "MDF" exhibitions. The show will be in a brand new raw space in the Chicago Arts District in Pilsen, at 1936 S Halsted. The show coincides with the Pilsen East Artist's Open House, which is to be held 9/26 - 9/28. Opening night reception will be Friday, September 26 from 6-10pm. Pre-orders will be taken for the first production run of Pinch, currently aiming for release in late 2008.018. Workshop On behalf of gravitytank, Craighton Berman recently co-developed a presentation and interactive workshop on using storyboarding for communicating ideas and designing experiences.
